Dr. Eduardo González, expert in Structural Mechanics and Head of Products at COMSOL AB (Sweden), offered a brief session, approximately half an hour long, during which he talked about the treatment of nonlinear materials in structural mechanics. Many materials could be represented by a nonlinear relationship between stress and strain. This nonlinear relationship had to be considered when analyzing objects composed of such materials, even under infinitesimal deformations.

He offered a brief session, approximately half an hour long, on the propagation of acoustic waves in thermoviscous media. He explained the physical peculiarities of systems with viscous losses and thermal conductivity, along with various computational alternatives for solving such problems. Additionally, he addressed the most relevant aspects for the correct modeling and acoustic simulation in compressible Newtonian fluids with losses. At the end of the presentation, he demonstrated the construction and analysis of a perforated panel model as an example.

He presented the five different types of inputs provided by the application builder, delving into each in detail through explanations and diverse usage examples. Each input represents a distinct data entry for the end-user when utilizing the application. By the end of the presentation, attendees had gained knowledge about the variety of input elements that can be integrated into an application, along with all available options.

Optimization
with COMSOL Multiphysics

Dr. Benjamín Ivorra has taught the Optimization course in the MUCOM master’s degree. He delivered a brief class presenting an example of geometric optimization for an elastic structure subjected to a surface load. The tutorial model involved a simplified “bridge” composed of a beam and a column, under a surface load. He addressed the optimal positioning of the column to minimize a representative value of the structure’s global deformation. The problem was solved using optimization methods implemented in the Optimization Module of COMSOL. Furthermore, he showcased an alternative resolution method using optimization algorithms in a MATLAB session connected to a COMSOL Multiphysics server running in the background.

Chemical Engineering

Dr. Juan Manuel Paz García has taught the Chemical Engineering and Electrochemistry in the MUCOM master’s program. He conducted a brief class where he showcased two noteworthy chemical simulations. In the first simulation, he utilized COMSOL’s Chemical Reaction Engineering Module to model a batch reactor. The modeling involved the use of the Optimization Module to conduct a parametric study aiming to derive the kinetic constant through comparison with experimental data. In the second example, he demonstrated the simulation of a lithium-ion battery undergoing charge-discharge cycles to study its thermal behavior.
