Juan Manuel Paz García

Departament of Chemical Engineering

University of Malaga

Chemical Engineer from the University of Malaga and PhD from the Technical University of Denmark. He has postdoctoral experience in international centers, such as the “Center of Excellence for Sustainable Water Technologies – Wetsus”, in the Netherlands, or the Technical School of Lund University, in Sweden.

Teaching

As a professor of the Department of Chemical Engineering of the University of Malaga, he develops his main teaching work in the Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Chemical Engineering. He teaches subjects of Process Intensification, Integrated Management Systems and Separation Operations and Environmental Engineering.

In addition, Professor Juan Manuel Paz García coordinates and participates in various educational innovation projects, aimed at promoting scientific-technical software in teaching for the curricular development of engineering students.

Research

As a researcher, he works in the field of secondary batteries, with special interest in lithium-ion batteries. Professor Juan Manuel Paz García’s research is oriented to the development of new generations of batteries, with better capacities and charging times.

He is also involved in the promotion of reuse technologies and the development of electrochemical techniques for the recycling of batteries and other discarded electronic material.

Numerical Simulation and COMSOL Multiphysics

He is specialized in the development of theoretical and numerical models of reactive transport processes of chemical species in porous media. More specifically, he works on the numerical solution of complex multiphase systems of the Nernst-Planck-Poisson and Nernst-Planck-Electroneutrality type. The above equations are coupled with chemical equilibrium models and/or chemical kinetics for the study of contaminant transport through various materials. For example, considering porous matrices such as soil or building materials.

As a regular work tool, Professor Juan Manuel Paz García uses the COMSOL Multiphysics simulation software. His simulation models, in continuous development, are used to study different problems such as soil decontamination, industrial chemical processes, process intensification through separation operations with chemical reaction, capacitive and electrodialysis cells, and secondary batteries. Currently, the elaboration of numerical models with COMSOL Multiphysics is an intensive task both in his research work and in his teaching activity.
