Electric and Magnetic Devices

Winter term

Taught by Víctor Calero Martín and Raúl Fernández Mateo

The analysis of electromagnetic devices and processes, in static and low-frequency cases, requires powerful and flexible simulation tools. The AC/DC Module of COMSOL Multiphysics provides a wide range of modeling features and numerical methods for investigating electromagnetic fields and performing interference and electromagnetic compatibility studies by solving Maxwell’s equations. The multiphysics capabilities of COMSOL Multiphysics allow investigating the impact of other physical effects, such as heat transfer phenomena, structural deformations and interaction with acoustic fields, within an electromagnetic model.

The course will begin by reviewing the fundamental concepts and physics interfaces of electromagnetism. These will be later implemented in multiphysics studies of electromagnetic devices, such as capacitors, inductions, transformers, motors, actuators, cables, coils, generators, etc.

    • Theoretical review of electromagnetism.
    • Electrostatics.
    • Electric Currents.
    • Electric Currents in Shells.
    • External Electric Circuits.
    • Magnetic fields.
    • Magnetic fields, no Currents, Boundary Element Method (BEM).
    • Coupled Electric and Magnetic Fields.
    • Magnetic Rotating Machinery.
